Behind the Porta Latina

November 27, 2011

Roofs unburied
still
the calm of centuries
weighs heavily
married to gravity
vault unfalling
bone dry air
unbreathed
rows of sunken jars
and lidless niches
the light of past lives
contained
frescoed figures
now faded
columbine grey prevails
above underground
a dove alights
on a bare branch.

What a lovely visual and sensory experience! The stale dry air, glowing jars, and faded frescos all so vivid. Love ‘above underground’ and the placement of the dove at the end…gorgeous : )

This seems like a departure for you and I think nicely done. You’ve captured all my favourite things about experiencing an ancient place!
